Sofia Sianis


Sofia Sianis joined the firm in 2021 after several years teaching as Specialized Faculty at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in the Geis College of Business while pursuing a dual degree Master’s in Urban Planning and a PhD in Regional Planning. Sofia taught courses in Real Estate Fundamentals, Urban Real Estate Valuation, Real Estate Development, and Real Estate Investments to an interdisciplinary group of undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. She also served as a faculty adviser to Rho Epsilon, the real estate student organization, mentoring and advising students interested in pursuing a career in real estate.

While she continues to work towards the completion of her PhD, her primary research area is in local public finance and economic development, with her dissertation focusing on property tax exemptions and their impact on local communities.

Before, returning to the University, Sofia spent 3 years working in a boutique real estate firm in Chicago, focusing primarily on property tax matters, including appeals, exemptions, incentives, and consulting but also garnering experience in eminent domain and land use matters. She regularly appeared before various County Boards of Review, Circuit Courts, and state level bodies such as the Property Tax Appeal Board and Michigan Tax Tribunal.

She also has experience as a legal consultant providing advice and legal support in a variety of real estate development matters working for several small multifamily residential development firms on an ongoing basis.

Sofia is a member of the Illinois State Bar Association and the Hellenic Bar Association. She is also a member of the Advisory Board for the Illini Real Estate Network (IREN) and a Faculty Board Member of the Harold E. Eisenberg Foundation.
